In little more than two months after the landings, Allied forces had liberated Paris. By the end of the year, most of France had been liberated and the Allies were at Germany s doorstep. By early 1945, the Allies had successfully breached the Siegfried line of defenses, and had begun the occupation of the Rhur, the industrial heartland of Germany. On June 6, 1944, in Operation Overlord, Allied forces landed on the beaches of Normandy and commenced the long awaited liberation of Europe. In less than 100 days, triumphant Allied armies were marching through the streets of Paris. Beginning with the hard-fought Normandy
landings, we follow the Allied armies as they establish and consolidate
their beachheads and begin the long slow march across the fields of
Normandy. By August, the Allied armies had broken through German lines and begun a frenzied dash across northern France to save Paris from imminent destruction. On August 25th, church bells throughout Paris rang out announcing that after four years of enemy occupation, Paris was again a free city.

Between November 1944 and March 1945, there were three key series of battles on the western front that sealed the fate of Adolph Hitler and Nazi Germany. This program follows the Allied armies as they begin the invasion of Nazi Germany. Witness the critical battles that led to the breaching of the Siegfried Line; the Nazi s Ardennes counteroffensive and the Battle of the Bulge, which finally broke it; and the final breaching of the Rhine beginning with the unexpected seizure of the last remaining bridge over the Rhine at Remagen. bloodiest of the war, truly were the beginning of the end of Nazi Germany.
